Just follow our easy 5 steps to making your own Terrarium at home with some basic tools, floristry materials and accessories.

You will need:

  • Terrarium, or suitable glass or acrylic container
  • A little trowel or long spoon
  • Gardening gloves
  • Miniature indoor plants, small succulents or tiny cactus
  • Potting Soil
  • Mix of small pebbles and larger stones
  • Moss
  • Sand (coloured or plain)
  • Small amount of Activated Charcoal (optional)
  • Decorative items such as natural pine cones, shells, sticks or fun objects such as Lego men, mini figurines or plastic toys.

5 steps to making your Father's Day Terrarium:

Step 1 - Base Layers

Start by adding the base layers to the Terrarium; 1-2 inches of sand, followed by 1-2 inches of stones, then a small handful of the activated charcoal, followed by a layer of moss on top. The layering improves natural water drainage, and the activated charcoal helps keep bacteria from growing.

Step 2 - Add the Soil

Top the base layers with a thick covering of soil. The soil should be a good couple of inches deep, so there is plenty of soil to cover the plant roots, plus a little extra growing room.

Step 3 - Dig and Plant

Use the little trowel or spoon to dig a hole in the potting soil for each plant. Carefully remove each plant from its pot and nestle the plant in the Terrarium, patting in well with soil. Start with the largest plant first, then add the rest around it ensuring they aren’t too cramped.

Step 4 - Top Level

Add in some more moss around the plant base, scatter of sand and little pebbles to cover the soil on show.

Step 5 - Decorate!

Get creative with the decorations that Dad will love for a really personal touch! You could create a Jurassic Park jungle, miniature gnomes playing football theme, Lego family camping In the wild or out of this world Star Wars style Terrarium.
